BLM Pulls Oil and Gas Leases from Sage Grouse habitat
After receiving protests and other expressions of concern from Grand County, the city of Granby, Representative Mark Udall (D-CO), and many conservation groups, including Center for Native Ecosystems, the Bureau of Land Management withdrew more than 50,000 acres from their proposed November sale of oil and gas leases in Colorado.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced on October 30 their withdrawal of more than 35 parcels from the November oil and gas lease sale. The BLM cited multiple reasons for the deferrals, including the need to communicate more with communities that would be affected by increased oil and gas drilling as a result of the leasing, but the majority of the acreage pulled from the sale was in essential habitat for the greater sage-grouse, a former candidate for Endangered Species Act protection and a Species of Conservation Concern in Colorado.
