Heart of the West
Our work is guided by the Heart of the West Conservation Plan for a biology-based, strategically designed network of linked core habitats and management prescriptions for protecting vital habitats.
Between the northern and the southern Rockies lies the Heart of the West ecoregion. Here, ecosystem management receives only lip service from land management agencies while massive new gas field development, explosive off-road vehicle use, and overgrazing by livestock combine to damage watersheds, threaten the economic bases of local communities, and push native species toward extinction. The Heart of the West Coalition, consisting of four regional conservation groups, was formed to combat these threats.
